Fall Wreath

Fall is my absolute favorite.  And since it is already Christmas according to stores, I wanted to make a fall craft that wasn’t completely pumpkin centered and would work through Thanksgiving time.  This is a really easy diy that doesn’t break the bank or take up your whole week.  I love how this turned out!  If you feel like making your own for the house or as a sweet gift, the directions are below…

WHAT YOU NEED:

Yarn – I got a sort of mustard and white really thick knitting yarn
Decorations – I bought a cheap fall bouquet and some berries from Michael’s
Wire wreath base
Scissors

DIRECTIONS:

1. I bought two colors of yarn because I wanted to have a guide for where I would place my decorations.  I did about an 8 inch section of white yarn.  A bit of advice here is to wrap the yarn around your hand and only do small sections at a time.  If you try to use the whole 40 yards you are going to go insane wrapping it, so cut it into smaller sections.  First, as easy as it sounds, make a knot around the wire rim and begin to wrap.  Wrap this section a bit loose but also very thickly so that you will be able to stick your decorations through later.

2. Take your second color and begin to wrap around the rest of the wreath.  Like I said above, do this in smaller sections, hiding your knots as you go along. Wrap this really tight. I found the best way was to wrap 3-4 ahead and then push them down tightly.

3. Here is what you should now have:

4. I decided to take the remaining yellow yarn and go over the section again but loose and chunky.  This gives the wreath a lot more character.  (I know, I just said character describing a wreath).  Also, don’t forget to make sure your dog is badgering you the ENTIRE time and stealing your yarn.

5. Now decide how you would like your decorations to look.  I did mine first on the table so I could see how they looked best, then began to stick them through the white portion of the wreath.  I cut up the bouquet making sure to give myself enough wire on the back of each flower to wrap it through…

6.You are done!  Now hang it up or give as a gift!

Sandy/Halloween/NorthCarolina

The past week has been difficult in the city.  With the horrible devastation from the hurricane, lack of power, transportation, and flooding it has been a different kind of week for sure.  Jay and I were so fortunate throughout the storm, with our only real issue being able to get to work (2 1/2 hour bus ride when it’s normally 20 minutes).  I can’t stop thinking about all the families and hope that we can help somehow.  Here are some pictures of our neighborhood and us at home from the days that followed…

(the NYC skyline with power out from our rooftop)

(working from home, rondo watching his first celtics game, crazy bus lines)

(rondo begging for my food, our park totally flooded, homemade ziti)

(comfy boy napping through the wind)

Before the hurricane was Halloween which was a great time!  We got all dressed up and went to our friends party.  Here are some pics from the night (Jay was Abu Nazir from Homeland and I was Khaleesi from Game of Thrones)…

This weekend after the storm and Halloween, I went to North Carolina to spend the weekend at ECU with my best friends!  We went to a football game, saw all our old haunts, ate a crazy amount of Bojangles, and were really excited to all be back together.  Here are some pics from the weekend…

(beautiful campus, beautiful friends)

(football time…and we actually won!)

Unfortunately now it’s back to reality…but I’m still so thankful for how lucky we were during the storm and hope the recovery is swift.

Fall in the City / Recipe

Fall in nyc isn’t quite the same as driving through the town I grew up in with changing leaves on every corner…but there is a little bit of color here which makes me happy.  I’ll take what I can get!  Plus, not being home means I don’t have to rake leaves…Dad knows how happy this makes me.

Last night I made some Halloween Bark for a party we are going to Saturday.  It came out pretty perfect…it was also crazy easy!  You can find the recipe here.  Here is the cooled bark:

And the final all bagged:

Jay and I are both excited to dress up this weekend and enjoy the party!

I’m pretty sure my family has already seen this picture but I love it so much I thought I would share…

Look at the anger!  I put the leash on him and then went to brush my teeth.  He was NOT having it…cracks me up.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Happy

This city is crazy. Crazy busy, crazy fast, crazy tiring…sometimes I forget to appreciate the things I have (especially when strangers are bumping into me on the subway).  Today I’m going to try and remember all the little (and silly) things I love and am surrounded by…

1. Heavy food is back!  Thank you cold weather for making every day seem appropriate for lemon sugar donuts and cheese.

2. My Mama.  She sent me home with a bunch of pumpkin decorations because she knows how much I love what she does with our house.  Jay’s Mom got us some things too!

3.  The fact that this is the view from Rondo’s daycare.  I mean, come on!

4.  I don’t think this one needs explanation (again, thanks Mama)…

5. My debate watching partner…

6.  This guy…

7. And most importantly, the fact that this turtleneck/t-shirt combo was documented (sorry Nick!)…

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend ahead!!

Enemies…

As usual, busy week!  Print weeks are always a little wild here at Rolling Stone.  Between getting all my art approved, making sure everything is booked, and my IOs are good to go, a lot has to be done in a short period of time.  The silver lining to all this madness is today is my Friday!  We’re off to see one of my best friends get married this weekend, yay!  I’m in the wedding (another yay) which means walking down the isle in the enemy above…be kind heels, be kind.

I met up with my other enemy/best friend today at lunch…

Oh fries with gravy and cheese…why must you be so delicious and so bad for me?  I love you so much…so much.

Just some things going on in the neighborhood.  They filmed Boardwalk at Diner, they were filming another episode right outside our building today, and suddenly there are neon heels on a bunch of telephone wires…weird.

One final picture before the weekend, a little preview of Halloween…

Cutest little guy in the world!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.  I can’t wait to share pictures of the wedding!
